Week 3 BME Immersion
Third week at immersion has been amazing! It has been a
perfect mixture of clinic work, surgeries, and research. The beginning of the
week was concentrated in clinic work following Dr. Hu with his patients and
attending to a robotic partial nephrectomy on Monday. Tuesday was a research
day analyzing data for the upcoming project of Dr. Hu’s team. The project is
based on the comparison of PIRADS first version and PIRADS second version.
PIRADS is the software used for targeted prostate biopsy. We were analyzing outcome of patients after
radical prostatectomy by PIRADS 2V compared to PIRADS 1V outcomes. Wednesday
was a robotic biopsy day with several cases following the targeted sites for
biopsy. There were also 2 cases with extra risk areas that needed to be
targeted besides the normal 12 points in the template. On Thursday, we met with
the whole research team to talk about the progress of every research project
and new ideas for upcoming ones. We had a FDA representative in the meeting who
has been working with Dr. Hu and who will be guiding me through my project. We
will be comparing five different FDA approved protocols for prostate focal
ablation and future directions. I have a ton of research and reading to do on
the field that will keep me entertained for a while!!! We closed the week on
Friday with two amazing surgeries! A
prostatectomy and a partial nephrectomy!! I called a very nice week.
