BME Immersion Week 2 (June 11th-17th)
To start the week with a good motivation, I attended a
couple of board round meetings on Monday. The cases were all the way from radio
neurosurgery with Dr. Pannullo to breast cancer and bone metastasis with Dr. Leonard.
The Doctors presented very challenging cases for the students to propose
treatments and understand which was the best choice and the reasons behind it.
We learned several therapies available for cancer depending on the severity of
the case, how to classify tumors according to their physical characteristics,
and the outcomes of therapies depending on the stage and kind of cancer. We
also got access to the machinery and OR where radio neurosurgery is performed;
as well as to the masks designed for the procedure.
Tuesday and Wednesday were clinic days with Dr. Hu in which
we performed several robotic prostate biopsies using the Artemis system. We had
cases that just need the standard number of biopsy points (N=12) and some that
need extra biopsy points (N=15 to N=18) since their MRI showed additional risky
sites. By the end of the day, we got a horse shoe kidney case that will be
operated by Dr. Hu in the following weeks. Overall, it was a very interested
clinic day with unique cases and excellent
mentoring through the procedures
from Dr.Hu
The end of the week was more related to research. On
Thursday, we had he usual weekly research meeting. They discussed the research
projects that are being developed at the lab as well as the future projects
that will be implemented next year and the procedures that need to be followed
to implement them. I got more information about two specific projects in which
I will be working for the rest of immersion. I will be meeting Dr. Hu next week
to decide which specific project I will be joining. Furthermore, Friday of next
week will be an interesting OR day… more details to come!!
On the other side, NYC wonderfulness never stops amazing
me!! I love being here and getting broke every day :)
